SFL shares experience and expertise on CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for languages) at the Ministry of Education

On Friday, 23 March 2012, SFL Assitant Director, Cigdem Tuncergil and SFL Curriculum Development Committee (CDC) Chair Pembe Nurcan Garip gave a seminar on CEFR at the Ministry of Education. State school teachers who are going to work on the committee responsible for aligning the English curriculum to CEFR in primary, secondary and vocational school education attended the seminar. In the seminar, Cigdem and Nurcan shared SFL experiences in revising the General English and Academic English programmes based on CEFR. Chief inspector Berna Yılmazoğlu Özdoğa thanked everyone for attending the seminar but especially SFL representatives and SFL for sharing their knowledge and experiences as well as for agreeing to help them as consultants whenever they need support.

SFL EPS Representation @ Youth Workshop

Last month Filiz Bodi, represented the SFL EPS at a 2 day Youth Workshop in Girne. The workshop was jointly organised by Turkey and the Northern Cyprus Ministry for National Education, Youth & Sports and the Directorate of Youth & Sports. The main theme of the workshop was Opportunities in/for Higher Education. Workshops included Youth Infrastructure, The Social Life of Youth, Health, Sports and Environment, Ethics and Human Values and Democratic Awareness and Participation in Democracy.

Digitalising Learning with the British Council

We are proud to announce that the British Council, Cyprus have selected the SFL EPS Students' Self Study Centre for their Digitalising Learning Project. Over the next few months, we will be working in collaboration with the British Council to train teachers on how to use the latest language learning technology.

Free Rice - Competition Winners

After weeks of excitement, EMU EPS students beat METU students in the Free Rice challenge between the two universities. EMU students easily won the challenge by donating over 1,500,000 grains of rice and feeding over 100 hungry people.

Congratulations to our highest scorer Hikmet, and his 103-07 classmates Niyazi and Acelya for their amazing contributions to the challenge.

Charity Bazaar at EMU

Our Intermediate Prep School Students are holding a Charity Bazaar in the grounds of the English Preparatory School today. All proceeds will go to Ozen Old People's Home and the Animal Protection Association. Hurry and buy your cakes, books, DVDs and hand-made crafts before everything sells out!!

The Free Rice Challenge

Steve Neufeld and METU (N. Cyprus) have challenged the SFL teachers and students to take part in the FREE RICE CHALLENGE.


What is Free Rice?

Free rice is a website where users play various educational, multiple-choice games in order to fight world hunger. For every question the user answers correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated.


How Do I Play?

1- Go to www.freerice.com and sign up. (EMU email addresses do NOT work, so please use an alternate email address)

2- Search and join the EMU SFL Instructors Group.

3- Start playing to donate rice and beat the METU staff.
